    paraphrasing of six sentences 6

    Dear teachers,

There are six original sentences as well as their modifications as a result of paraphrasing of some words and words combinations from the corresponding former one.

1.1. There is no doubt as to who committed this outrage.
1.2. There is no doubt as to who committed this shocking act.

2.1. He was in a most responsive mood and immediately caught on at my idea.
2.2. He was ready to listen and immediately caught on at my idea.

3.1. The proportions of the face in the portrait were distorted.
3.2. The proportion of the face in the portrait were incorrect.

4.1. He is notorious for such sayings.
4.2. He is well known for such sayings.

5.1. I decided to intervene to prevent any unpleasantness.
5.2. I decided to mediate to prevent any unpleasantness.

6.1. A Frenchman speech is characterized by exuberance, an Englishman prefers the understatement.
6.2. A Frenchman speech is characterized by exuberance, an Englishman expresses himself less emotionally.

Would you be kind enough to verify their English sounding?

    Thank you for your efforts.

    Regards.

    Hi vil,

1.1. There is no doubt as to who committed this outrage. These 2 mean the same.
1.2. There is no doubt as to who committed this shocking act.

2.1. He was in a most responsive mood and immediately caught on at my idea.
2.2. He was ready to listen and immediately caught on at my idea.
I think it would be better to use "immediately understood my idea."

3.1. The proportions of the face in the portrait were distorted.
3.2. The proportions of the face in the portrait were incorrect.
These 2 mean about the same.
4.1. He is notorious for such sayings.
4.2. He is well known for such sayings.
    'Notorious' has a negative connotation.
5.1. I decided to intervene to prevent any unpleasantness.
5.2. I decided to mediate to prevent any unpleasantness.
These 2 mean about the same.
6.1. A Frenchman's speech is characterized by exuberance, an Englishman prefers the understatement.
6.2. A Frenchman's speech is characterized by exuberance, an Englishman expresses himself less emotionally.
    Not exactly the same.

    Hi bhaisahab,

Thank you for your approval, corrections and recommendations.

Concerning your note I would like to quote the following two definitions:

Known widely and unfavorably: common, infamous.
Widely known and discussed: famed, famous, leading, popular, well-known.

Concerning your disapproval of the last paraphrasing I offer to your attention another two versions:

6.1. A Frenchman's speech is characterized by exuberance, an Englishman prefers the understatement.

6.2. A Frenchmanís speech is characterized by exuberance, an Englishman prefers the restraint (underplaying).

6.2. A Frenchmanís speech is characterized by exuberance, an Englishman expresses himself with more restraintment.

    Regards.
