    console vs. comfort

    console (COMFORT)
    verb [T]
to make someone who is sad or disappointed feel better by giving them comfort or sympathy:
He tried to console her, but she kept saying it was all her own fault.
I tried to console her with a box of chocolates.
I was consoling Liz on having broken up with her boyfriend.
Hi! I'd like to learn what the difference between "console" and "comfort".

Can I replace 'console' with 'comfort' in above context? Thank you!

Yes; in those sentences, "console" is the better word.

    Comfort someone who is sick.

Console someone who is having problems.

    Re: console vs. comfort

'console' is to comfort (someone) at a time of grief or disappointment. It is mainly expressed in words, person to person, though in contests, there is what is known as the Consolation Prize for the runner-up.

He tried to comfort her, but she kept saying it was all her own fault.
You don't try to console a robber or a murderer for their crime or if they get caught. Which word to use here hinges on the context and what has happened that she is saying is all her fault.

I tried to comfort her with a box of chocolates.
You wouldn't offer someone chocolates as you break the news, oh, your husband's dead. So are you encouraging comfort eating after another breakup or some other disappointment? If she missed out on getting a dream job, then maybe 'console', though the person's social I.Q. is a bit low - taking them out to dinner maybe, but one step up from a lollypop for consolation?.....

I was consoling Liz on having broken up with her boyfriend.
