Cool on the ride of their lives

A couple of sentences which I'll be grateful you corroborate my interpretation or if it is the case correct it.

"Before they know, these friends are on the ride of their lives."

May them mean: "They don't know it but they are in the most important moment of their lives."?

    Thanks a lot,

Re: on the ride of their lives

this could be meant literally or figuratively. What is the context? - are they actually moving, or are they caught up in some risky or thrilling situation?

They are three mature women. The husband of one of them dies; that's a great shock for her and she determines to travel in a vintage car with two friends of her; they have adventure and meet a friendly trucker, and so on... Final sentence says what I'm asking for meaning: Before they know it, these friends are on the ride of their lives.

Maybe it means: They don't know it but they are on the most important trip of their lives

    Thanks.

Re: on the ride of their lives

It seems to me to mean more that they are about to find their lives changed forever, that their experiences have altered them as people, and that they will in future live quite different lives from those they had.
