    what is a poofter?

I was told that a "poofter" was a weak, feminine man (not necessarily gay!) but the dictionnary says that it is derogatory for a homosexual. Which information is correct? Would "wimp" be a good (not too pejorative) expression? Thanks!

Poofter = a pejorative and unacceptable term for homosexual.

In what context do you want to use either poofter or wimp?

    Re: what is a poofter?

I donīt want to use the word myself, I just tried to understand (and to find a good German translation) what was meant when others used this term in a conversation. Afterwards I looked it up and was a bit shocked and in this context I found the other word "wimp" ...

Wimp really means weak and cowardly.

I have been trying to find a word that will convey effeminacy but not homosexuality. So far it eludes me - maybe someone else will come up with something.
