    gay and refined

    Dear Teachers,

I read this from True Pleasures by Lucinda Holdforth:

"As the gay and refined Age of Reason headed towards its revolutionary climax, Madame du Deffand clung to the old codes. She and her friends scoffed at the encyclopedists' faith in progress; they derided the new vogue for sentimentality."

Does "gay" mean delightful here? Why is Age of Reason "gay"?
    Does "refined" mean cultured/polite?

    Re: gay and refined

It wasn't a time characterised by gloom or misery, but one that was optimistic and believed it could find solutions.
