    lay down life

I would like to know if the sentence ,'they laid down their life in service to their country"has grammatical mistakes.

    ((Not a teacher))

I guess, "They laid down their lives for their country" would be good enough.

They laid down their lives in (the) service of their country. This is better.

'They laid down their life in service to their country"

What is implied is that they each laid down their life.
'life' here is being used in the sense of 'one's very own existence', as opposed to 'lives' as in 'our daily lives'

But, surely, "they laid down their lives" means that each individual person laid down his/her life. I really don't see where "laid down their life" can be correct.

    Re: lay down life

You will find as much wide-spread disagreement on this as we two are showing.
The essence is the use of 'life' as 'one's existence', rather than what is implied by 'our lives would be so easier with technology'.
    I'll stick with:
They (with 'each' implied) lay down their life.
