    What is exactly the difference?

What is exactly the difference between ERROR and MISTAKE? If somebody says: "I have made a mistake." How will one know if they were not rather talking of an ERROR?

There's no difference. They mean the same thing.

Computers make errors. People make mistakes.

Re: What is exactly the difference?

The two are used interchangeably in many contexts.
But: a 'mistake' is usually caused by poor judgment or a disregard of rules or principles :
"It was a grave mistake not to tell the truth in his court case." (He chose to lie on the witness stand.)

an 'error' implies an unintentional deviation from standards of accuracy or right conduct

What David L. said plus they are from different origins, "mistake" comes from Old Norse via Old English and "error" comes from Old French.
