    latch onto something

    Hi,

    latch onto something
to become interested in an idea, story or activity, and to start to use it:
    - Unfortunately the press have already latched onto the story.

Does this phrase have a negative connotation?

Yes, but only because of the word "unfortunately."

The press latching onto a story is not necessarily a negative thing.
