An intransitive verb - does not: to rise, to sit.
Sometimes it makes more sense to speak about transitive and intransitive meanings rather than transitive and intransitive verbs, because one and the same verb can be used both transitively and intransitively.
e.g. The girl is smelling a flower. (transitive)
The flower smells good (intransitive)
