    Compound verb

    The Parts of Speech

In this this link I found the following:
The sheriff told us that if we did not leave town immediately he would jail us. Here "jail" is part of the compound verb "would jail."

** Is "would jail" really a compound verb?
I would've thought of it as simply a modal auxiliary + verb

I'm more comfortable with the term 'tense auxiliary' for the verb 'would' here. 'Would jail' is an analytical form called future indefinite-in-the-past.
