Red face please explain a difficult sentence.

Operating income was up 5%, as higher volumes and improved productivity helped to offset flat pricing as our traditional customers shifted to managed care systems.

    (1) The word "higher volumes" means increase of patients?
    (2) The word "traditional customers" means hospitals?
    (3) Could you please explain the phrase "offset flat pricing"?

    Thank you very much.

Re: please explain a difficult sentence.

Operating income was up 5%, as higher volumes (numbers of patients) and improved productivity helped to (balance out static patient charges) offset flat pricing as our (usual, expected time frame) traditional customers shifted to managed care systems.

Re: please explain a difficult sentence.

The term "higher volume" certainly means in increase in something. Given the context, I would say we would have to be talking about patients. (The word "volume" is a noncount noun.) Are we talking about a hospital supply business or something like that?
