"We have become like one big family, sharing study notes and helping each other navigate through the university system."

Why don't we use 'were' or any other form of the verb 'to be' before "sharing" and "helping"?

    Thanks in advance.
    Welcome!
"have become" is very suitable here because it indicates a change. If you want to use the verb 'to be', you could say 'We (now are)(are now) like one big family.....'. The use of "now" also indicates a change from the past.

You can't use "were" because "were" refers to the past, and you are talking about the present situation.

Some words have been omitted because they do not affect the meaning. the full sentence would be:

We have become like one big family, and so we are sharing study notes and helping each other navigate through the university system.(helping each other just like members of a real family do).
