Hi to everyone,
I am a new member of this forum from Turkey. I have difficulties when reading an original book-for example ,I am reading the diary of Adrian Mole these days and there are some cultural terms which I can't understand-
Who shall I ask my questions to? In fact I was hoping to write my problems to tutors and get answers. Will it be possible here? If anyone shows me the way I will be happy
I hope I won't bore you with my questions-I guess Iwill ask everything.
It says "ManpowerServises" somewhere.
Here is the sentence
..... avoid working for Manpower Services as a canal bank renovator.
What kind of organisations are Manpower Services ?
Does it mean they supply manpower?Or what do they supply ? Can you please explain ??
By the way it tells about Falkland Islands. As far as I remember There was a conflict. Was it between Argentina and England? How long did it take?
Lord Carrington was mentioned too.Why did Lord Carrington resign? Was it related to Argentinian conflict?
What is Scoop ?? Adrian says he is reading it by a woman called Evelyn Waugh? What does she mostly write about?Or Is she also imaginary ?
There is another sentence .This time my problem is the language.
Here it is "every fibre of my being cries out for your immediate physical proximity"
What is 'being cries out for sth.' ?
Adrian's mother needs money for her 'Well Woman' test. What is it?
'spawning ground' is used in a poem which was written to Pandore-his lover. He says "I hope she realizes the symbolism. What does it symbolize?"
Here is the poem
I am a Tuna fish in the sea of discontent
Swimming in the sea of discontent
Will I find the spawning ground?
What is 'somebody's milkround'?
