    It means "Don't put all your earthly belongings into one venture" or "Don't put all your money into one mining stock."
    If you do this, and somehow the basket breaks, you have no eggs. So you put some of your eggs in one basket, and some in another one. Ideally, you'd select a safe portfolio of baskets, depending on your risk-talking proclivities, and the likely returns from each basket, etc.
