    The woods

    What's the difference between these two sentences?
    1)The woods is on fire.
    2)The woods are on fire.

    Thanks for the reply. However, Both of "woods" in those sentences are countable nouns. That is, "a wood" VS "a woods"

    a large and thick collection of growing trees: a grove or forest

    I don't believe I have ever seen "the woods" in the meaning of more than one group of trees as anything but a plural. So "The woods is on fire" is incorrect.
