It can't take a direct or indirect object.Is this right?

What about these examples:

Our teacher became angry.
Your sister seems upset.
All the players felt very tired after the game.
That sounds great.

They're copula verbs, too. Here's a short list. It also seems to be spelled two ways, with or without an R at the end.

Become strikes me as a slightly odd copula verb because it does more than just link, but acts on the subject denoting a process or change of some sort.
