1) What is the difference between a policeman and a police officer?
2) We say to a boxer: Give your opponent much more punches or many more punches? I watched Fight Quest on Discovery Chanel and they used the first one
A policeman is male, a police officer could be male or female.
We used to have policemen only. When women began working in the police force, we had 'policeman' and 'policewoman'.
Then the issue of 'sexisim' emerged, and so we no longer allude to gender in occupations. The neutered terminology is now 'police officer' for both.
It goes too far, methinks, when 'actor' is used to refer to both male and female thespians. Could one really have said, with a straight face, that 'Marilyn Monroe has been nominated for Best Actor.'
(nominated Best Foreign Actress, the British Film Awards, 1956.)
