What is meant by "as thirsty as a sponge"? Is it British or American?

    Re: seeking help

That is called a simile. Other examples are:
    as hungry as a horse
    as lazy as a pig
    as brave a a lion

    not a teacher

    Re: seeking help

In British English, we can say that someone who drinks a lot (alcohol) drinks like a sponge/fish. I haven't come across your example before, though the meaning is clear.
