Question (What) if you were or (What) if you are

I know that we must use "(what) if you were...." (say "a superhero"), but is it possible to use "(what) if you are..." sometimes, too?

    Ok, fair enough.
    You went:
[ I know that we must use "(what) if you were...." (say "a superhero"), but is it possible to use "(what) if you are..." sometimes, too? ]

I think you're getting mixed up with the subjunctive, where you say "What if I were", rather than "What if I was". "What if you were" doesn't change in the subjunctive since it already uses "were".

It is possible to say "What if you are ... "
Man (stranger): Will you come on a date with me tonight?
Woman: "What if you're an axe-murderer!"

A: "I think we should go east"
B: "What if you are wrong?"

Question Re: (What) if you were or (What) if you are

I think what if you are/were or what if I was/am, they are very similar. So yeah, that doesn't really matter.

Here's the orignial sentence that I came up with:
What if you are a superhero, will you use your superpower to save the world?
    But, I realized that
What if you were a superhero, would you use your.....
    sounds better.

Now, please tell me which one is correct?

Ah, now I understand your question.
The second is right. "What if you were a superhero ..."
You can't use "What if you are ..." with that meaning; only in the type of contexts I gave in my last post.
But you could say: "Imagine you are superman ..." or "Pretend you are superman ..." The person plays along with game, and imagines or pretends. Then it's ok to say "Will you save the world?"

hugsandkisses, you declared that your mother tongue is English, but you have, so to speak, given me (us) a reason do doubt it. So, to get straight to it - is it a mistake, or you really are a native speaker of English language?

    Hi, IvanV!

Well...I personally do not care whether or not the poster is a native speaker of English when he/she is asking questions.
So...what's the reason that you doubt his first language is not English?
S/He's asking about the usage of 'conditionals', perhaps?

Wink Re: (What) if you were or (What) if you are

Yeah. Native speakers also make mistakes. Remember this...nobody's perfect. *sigh*
Well prove it to me then that you don't make grammar or spelling mistakes on your eassays.
