    Why???

    Hello,
    I wanted to ask something, I have seen in some novel that the things which should be used with the plurals are being used with singulars that made me totally confused. I'm mentioning some lines from one of the novels.

    -But what if it were not true? (Here, "were" is being used with "it" though "it" is singular)

    -If he weren't, XYZ knew what ABC would think. (Here also, "were" is being used with "he")

    -If he were suffering from paranoia, they would have to commit him.

    [Please, do mention if there are any grammatical mistakes.]

    It is correct to use "were" for singular in if-clauses.

    It is possible to say ''If I was...'', but it's considered to be very informal, and it is used chiefly in speech. Normative grammarians consider this form incorrect, but it is perfectly acceptable in colloquial language.
