Question verb in singular or plural?

Hello, my another question is what form of verb "be" to be used in the following sentence: There is a number of peculiarities or There are a number of peculiarities.
I think both are correct but I am not sure.

    Thanks,
    Marketa

Re: verb in singular or plural?

Ex: There are a number of peculiarities.

Note: The number of is always singular. A number of is always plural. (See http://www.tricity.wsu.edu/writingce...ubjectverb.pdf)
