    Correct use of plurals

    1. I want to know the populations of these genotypes.
    2. I want to know the population of these genotypes.

Both of these seem to be correct. My guess of the meanings are:
    1. I want to know the population of each genotype.
    2. I want to know the total population of all genotypes.

If you have links to sources to learn this, could I please have them?

    Cheers,

The word "population" appears to be a noncount noun.

My guess at the meanings is...

    1. I want to know the populations of these genotypes.

You have two or more genotypes, bacteria etc, and want to know the population of each.

I want to know the population of these genotypes.
However many different kinds of genotypes or bacteria you have, you want to know the total population altogether.
