The present perfect or the past perfect.

    HI,
"I never (read) a story that interested me so much as the one I read last night."
Could you please tell which tense of the verb "read" is correct?
To me, it would be the past perfect "had never read".
    Am I right?
    Thanks.

    Hi mylevt

    The past perfect is perfect.

"I had never read a story that interested me so much as the one I read last night."

Re: The present perfect or the past perfect.

    Hi mylevt

Actually, I think you can also use the present perfect. I might explain it this way:

With the past perfect, the focus of the verb 'read' would be on when the reading took place: all of the reading before last night, and the reading last night. The focus of "the one I read last night" is when.

If you use the present perfect, then you would basically be looking at "the one I read last night" less in terms of when, and more in terms of which.
    In other words:
"I have never read a story that interested me so much as that one (i.e.the one I read last night)."
