    What manufacturers etc like is to have an 'edge' =a quality or factor that gives superiority over close rivals or competitors.

    So, when digital phone technology not only has an advancement, but one with an acronym of EDGE - what a bonus. When they have 'an edge' over previous technology, they are not going to pronounce their acronym ED -GA or ED-GEE.

    It's pronounced 'edge'
