    allow

I would like to know the subject of "allow" in the next sentence.

Mesquite wood is hard, allowing it to be used for furniture and implements.

    I'd prefer:
Mesquite wood is hard making it suitable to be used for furniture and implements.

    not a teacher

"Mesquite wood is hard" is the subject clause.
    "The fact that
Mesquite wood is hard allows it to be used for furniture and implements." Here, "the fact" is the subject of "allows". What is the fact? "Mesquito wood is hard".
