Could you please tell me the meaning of "as" in the sentence? Can I omit it without changing it meaning?
Could it be an ellipsis?
They didn't move as much (as that)?
By the way '... without changing its meaning.' Better 'without changing the meaning of the sentence.'
If the original meaning was 'as much (as something else)' then you cannot remove the 'as' and still retain the original meaning of the sentence. It is, however, possible to say 'They didn't move much', meaning, they were mostly standing still.
Or, "They didn't move as much as (they did) before." It depends completely on context.
