    Smile Alaska & America

Listen to me, all of you. We are staying.
We have a great life in Alaska...
...and we're never going back to America again.
This is the dialogue from The Simpsons, Cartoon. Since Alaska is one of 50 states of the US, Why did Homer say that? Don't they stay in the States?

Don't Americans emotionally regard Alaska as a part of America?

    Re: Alaska & America

Perhaps it is trying to show that he feels Alaska to be so different from the rest of America that he emotionally thinks of it as a place entirely separate. It may also be intended to show the irony in his thinking, in the sense that he feels he is 'escaping' America when in fact he has only gone to a different part of it. His troubles will most likely catch up with him.

It may even be a freudian slip, whereby his talking of Alaska as separate from America shows his unconscious desire for it to be so.

I would think that the emotional attachment to Alaska wouldn't be as strong due to its geographical isolation and the fact that it was one of the last states to join the US.

They do, but Homer doesn't, or rather doesn't seem to know that. His words are intended to reflect his thinking, not that of Americans in general.
