    the second question

    Hi

    (a) A:Do you enjoy working?
    (b) B:Well, the company I work for is great.
    (c) A:Then what is your hesitation?
    (d) B:I guess I had always hoped that by now I stay home with the kids.

Which option contains an awkward expression or an error in grammar?

Please help me to understand the conversation.

    Thanks regards!

To me, it should go like this:

(d): I guess I had always hoped that by now I would have been staying home with the kids.

    Re: the second question

    Why the confusion?

In conversation we often use short cuts and informal structures. If you look at the second question ( C ) it does look awkward, though it may be quite acceptable in an informal or relaxed context. I think Then why the hesitation? is better English, but it's no biggie.

However the second answer ( D ) sounds like English might not be her first language. To be clear, she/he should have said I guess I had always hoped that by now I'd be able to stay at home with the kids. It could be put a number of similar ways but it's quite erroneous the way it's expressed in the original example.

The third sentece seems a little off, but the fourth sentence is much more so. More likely:
I guess that I had always hoped that by now I would be staying at home with the kids.
