Question Doubt about A & An.

Can a teacher explain me the correct use of A & An?. I was told we use "an" before a consonant. But when I made the test I realized I was wrong.

    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the forums.

"A" before a consonant; "An" before a vowel

    A car; an automobile

    "a" before a consonant sound: a cat; a universe; a U-turn; a horse.
"an" before a vowel sound: an apple, an hour, an honour.
Sometimes, it depends on the local pronunciation: a/an heuristic, a/an historical site; a/an hysterical person. This only happens with "h"

And be careful with letters themselves: an MSc, etc
