    Question A or An

Should you always use "an" before a noun that starts with an "H" or is an "a" used in some circumstances?

Certain words starting with "h", which derive from French, used to lose the "h" sound - hotel, historical being two examples. Today the general practice is to pronounce the "h", so "a hotel" is normal.
