    Post Question: understanding of "off"

On the first day of the Beijing Olympic Games last Saturday, as judoka Choi Min-ho won a gold medal in the 60-kilogram class, he could not stop his tears, even after stepping off the winnerís podium. All the stress he experienced to get to this point and the joy of winning must have been mixed up in an emotional cocktail.

I wonder that how I understand for "off" in above sentences.

Also, I don't know whether "off" is used as a phrase like "step off".

So, I don't know what a underline part means.

    Re: Question: understanding of "off"

He would step onto the podium to receive the medal, then step off the podium.
off' is being used as a preposition meaning :'moving away from, down from'

We can say, "Please step into my office."

These are prepositions used after the verb 'step' and before the noun (office/podium) - the noun telling us where the action of 'stepping' is directed towards or away from.

One can 'step down as Secretary of a committee', meaning, relinquish the office of Secretary.

A promotion at work can be termed 'a step up the career ladder'
