    need "an" or not?

    Please help:

    The means of case modification in CBD can well help a designer to determine an appropriate chunking as focus point in extension stimulation.

    "an" is fine - but "chunking" is not. Too informal. What do you mean with this word?

    chunking refers to a strategy for making more efficient use of short-term memory by recoding information...
