    Why "Tom" for a girl?

Yesterday I watched the Olympic women's volleyball match between America and China. What surprised me was not the result of the Chinese team's being defeated; I was surprised to notice that one member of the US women's volleyball team is named "Tom". Why does a girl have a boy's name? Or is it that "Tom" can be a name either for a boy or for a girl? .... I paused to google it and found that the player's full name is Logan Tom. So, Tom here is a family name, is it? I always have something to learn about English! I have a long way to go before I acquire a good command of English and that way seems endless!

English, or more often, American names are strange. April or Apple, Summer and many other are really...strange. Tom as a family name may be misleading, but I think such cases happen in many languages.

What you directed me to broadens my horizons.I pondered over the name of George and also about the twin names "Tony" and "Toni", but I have never thought about more such interesting English names. Thank you.
