    to free(v)

    Hello all
I just want to make sure about the use of the verb "to free". So here're my sentences:
He was jailed in 1983 and was freed in 1988. (is that right?! If not, how can we say it otherwise using free as a verb?).
    As we can also say:
    He became free in 1988.
    Thanks in advance
    sara

Your usage is perfect, and the best way to say this.

    An alternative sentence could be

He was jailed in 1983 and [was] released in 1988.

    Re: to free(v)

    hello,

Is there any difference between :
    He become free in 1988
    and
He was made free in 1988

Is the second sentence imply that he was released earlier whereas the first one that he underwent entire jail sentence ?

    Cheers

The context will govern the meaning. The first tells you that he was no longer in jail but not how or why; the second tells you that the authorities or some other person released him.

    I'm not a teacher.

    Hi sara88,

There is another possibility: ... and was set free in 1988.

    Regards

    Re: to free(v)

    Thanks everyone for answering.
To sum up our answers, I can say that there's three possible answers:
He was jailed in 1983 and freed in 1988.
    .............................and released in 1988.
    .............................and set free in 1988.
    I think now I'm right!!
