    For even as it is

If I should fall sick, what would happen to my children, and the wife whom I love more dearly than life itself? They would surely starve, for even as it is they often go hungry to bed.

    * What do the words in bold mean?

Susie, is the expression in bold in the OP correct? Or should I change to what you suggests?

It's not wrong, just a bit hard to parse; the poor brain of the reader/listener receives this string of words "for+even+as+it+is+they", and while listening/reading they have to ask themselves many questions:
    • What sort of "for"?
    • What sort of "even"?
    • What sort of "as"?
    • What does "it" refer to?

and so on. I'm probably over-fond of dashes, but I think they'd be justified here:

'for - even as it is - they often go to bed hungry' (and you'll have noticed that I moved the "hungry", to make the link between "go" and "to bed" clearer.

Re: For even as it is

Is for even as it is a shortened form of for even as it is now?
