    endowment payout

    From Newsweek, International Edition.

At Harvard last year, philanthropy made up 40 percent of the total budget. (About 33 percent of that came from endowment payouts.)

    What does "endowment payouts" mean?

    Re: endowment payout

An endowment is a sum of money given to the college in order to establish a college post, fund a prize, or fund scholarships.

The payout is the money paid out in support of these aims.

    The endowers.

These can be individuals [such as Bill Gates] or companies [such as Microsoft]. Anyone can endow so long as they have money enough to do so.
