    expenditure/outlay

    Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to explain to me the distinction between "expenditure" and "outlay"?

    Thank you for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V.

    Re: expenditure/outlay

An outlay is "front money" - money given before or spent before the event; perhaps a deposit.

The initial outlay for the trip was $5,000. That was for plane fare and hotels.

Expenditure is the cost of something.

We expect expenditures to be another $2,000 for the entire vacation.
