what is the parts of speech of lacking?

The earliest English settlers in Virginia failed to survive their first winter in the New World because of factors such as inadequate food supplies, harsh weather, and an inability to communicate with Native Americans.
    A an inability
    that they were unable
    because they were unable
    being unable
    E lacking an ability

I selected E because I thought lacking is an adjective and because lacking an ability is following the parallelism in that lacking is an adjective like inadequate and harsh. But the answer turned out to be A. The explanation given for E is that it is a verb construction

Kindly dissect this structure for me

"lacking" (as in E) seems to be used as a present participle and directly refers to "factors",the preceding noun, which doesn't make any sense since factors can't be lacking(well,at least not in this sentence).

Still, you were right on target by pointing out the structural parallelism evident in the sentence, namely the enumeration of nouns such as "inadequate food supplies, harsh weather.."
which can only be maintained by selecting A) an inability.

"Because of...inadequate food supplies, harsh weather and an inability..."
"Because of lacking an ability..." doesn't work.
"Because of a lack of ability..." works.

    Think about it.

Re: what is the parts of speech of lacking?

By the way, it's "what are the parts of speech..." "parts" is plural.
