    each other / one another

    Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to confirm the actuality of the following statement?

“Each other” and “one another” have the same meaning but “one another” is usually used when more than two people are concerned, and “each other” is usually used for two people only.

We can help each other. (I can help you and you can help me.)
We couls all help one another.
We can do each other’s work. ( I can do your work and you can do mine.)
They were still holding one another’s hands.

    Thank you for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V.

To my knowledge, the two expressions are interchangeable nowadays; there used to be, however, a difference between them like the one vil has already mentioned in his post.

Since I consider myself a prescriptivist, I would still recommned applying the rule in tests or exams - each other for two people only, and one another for more than two people.
