    This or That?

    I am perplexed as to when "that or this" is used in sentences, sometimes.
    For example,
    He works too hard. That/This what is wrong with him.
    Also,
    He fails his final examination. That/This/It(which one is correct) is because he has not been well prepared for it.

    I would appreciate it if explanation could be given for your choices.

    "That" is almost always acceptable in cases such as you've mentioned.
