Post a bare knuckle brawl for the White House.

From Obama launches his historic bid to become America's first black president ... and tells 80,000 supporters: It's time for change | Mail Online

In the text below, what does "bare knuckle brawl" mean?

Formally accepting the Democrat Party’s presidential election, Mr Obama left no doubt in the minds of 80,000 cheering supporters and a prime time TV audience that he plans a bare knuckle brawl for the White House.

This is used to suggest that Obama plans a no-holds barred campaign.
Both phrases use sporting analogies - the first is from boxing - a bare knuckle brawl is a fight without rules or referee, comparable with a street fight where the fighter will do anything to win.
No holds barred is from wrestling and again is a bout in which the wrestlers can do pretty much anything they like.
So Obama plans a campaign in which he intends to do anything he needs to do to win.

And of course "bare knuckle" boxers fight without gloves, using their bare fists, so the blows are harder and more damaging.

    I'm not a teacher.

    Hi dilermando,

There is my two cents contribution.

bare knuckle brawl = fighting is referred to as "fisticuffs" as they fight without gloves, and is therefore "bare-knuckle".

bare-knuckle = · Slang. Of a fiercely implacable character: the bare-knuckle world of commercial real estate.

    Regards,

    V.
