When a man softly speaks words of romance and seduction to a woman, he is said to be, "whispering sweet nothings in her ear."

Perfectly true. However, within the phrase is the subtle warning that these words of love may actually not have any substance!

There's no implication in the phrase that the "sweet nothings" are insincere or meaningless. They're "nothings" because the actual words don't mean a lot in terms of information exchange. But of course anything can happen in "love".
