    happen x take place

    Are these sentences right?
    - The accident took place in Chicago
    - The meeting happened in 1998
    - The show took place in September

Apart from each one needing a full stop at the end, they seem fine to me.

    Really?

I would have interchanged the first with the second.

happen: take place without a plan, by chance

take place: can be by chance, but mostly planned.

    The accident happened in Chicago
    - The meeting took place in 1998

So much for being a native speaker!
    Thanks Heidi
