    thought vs however

    hello, I have doubts using thought vs however, can you tell me the difference to appropriate use in my essays and papers.

    No doubt you mean though not thought.
    Often it's a matter of style.You can start a sentence with however, but not with though (when it means however).
    1. She's very pretty. However I don't like her personality. Correct
    2. She's very pretty, however I don't like her personality. I don't like this one (?comma splice)
    3. She's very pretty. Though I don't like her personality. Incorrect (in my opinion)
    4. She's very pretty, though I don't like her personality. Correct
    The longer the sentence, the worse it is if it starts with though with this meaning, because a qualification is expected and it doesn't come (as in 3).

    She's very pretty. Though I don't like her personality, I have to work with her.
    That's how though starts a sentence, and you can't substitute however for it in this case.
    Rule (for formal writing):
    If your sentence is a qualification of the previous sentence, start with However.
    If your sentence includes a statement and a qualification, start with Though.
    Though I've stated this rather categorically, I'm open to other opinions.
