Ana is a friend of Betty's.
    Betty's a friend of hers.
She told him her parents were pretty well off.

There's a grammatical rule involved. I'm not a grammatical guy, so, I prefer tell you it would be at least awkward whether you had written your reply like this:

Can you tell mine why HIS is correct? Why not HIM?

They are possessive pronouns, somehow they are related to possession, look:

I'm gonna tell HIM you are not ready.
'HIM' would be replaced by any name, like John.
I'm gonna tell John you are not ready.

You should love HER for teaching you Math.
You shoul love Tina for teaching you Math.

I'm gonna hit HIS car with my bike.
'HIS' would be replaced by any name with the possessive 's.
I'm gonna hit John's car with my bike.

That jacket belongs to HER cousin.
That jacket belongs to Tina's cousin.

    I'm a friend of HIS = I'm a frind of John's.
    You're a friend of HERS = You're a friend of Tina's.

    Hope this helps.
