Grammar question "I hear a rumor"

" I hear a rumor that our parents are going to have a meeting soon with our teachers to ban..."

Although the phrase "I hear a rumor that..." is used a lot in American-English, isn't "I heard a rumor" more grammatically correct?

Re: Grammar question "I hear a rumor"

Not necessarily. "Heard" indicates it happened in the past; "hear" indicates the speaker is concerned with a recently occurring rumour.
