Post a hockey mum and a pitbull

From Watch out Obama - I'm a pitbull in lipstick, says barnstorming Sarah Palin | Mail Online

Egged on by thunderous ato egg onpplause, she described herself as ‘a hockey mum who signed up with the PTA’ and then joked: ‘You know what they say is the difference between a hockey mum and a pitbull? Lipstick!’

    1) In the text above, what do the words in bold mean?

From egg on definition - Dictionary - MSN Encarta

to egg on : to encourage somebody to do something, especially something wrong, foolish, or dangerous.

    2) The definition from Encarta fits in the text above?

    1) In the text above, what do the words in bold mean? A hockey mum is a mother who supports her hockey playing offspring to the nth degree, not letting anything get by her. Just as a pitbull terrier will not let got once it has its teeth into something. The only difference is that the hockey mum uses lipstick whereas a pitbull terrier does not.

From egg on definition - Dictionary - MSN Encarta

to egg on : to encourage somebody to do something, especially something wrong, foolish, or dangerous.

    2) The definition from Encarta fits in the text above? Essentially, yes - though it need not lead to foolishness or danger.

FYI - In the American press today, there was a little backlash about that "joke." Some thought it was not that funny.

We say, "Hockey Mom" but in this election, the term "Mortgage Mom" is also used.

    1) What does "FYI" mean?

    2) Why are you calling her a "Mortage Mom"?

I haven't heard "Mortgage Mom" -- is it supposed to refer to people who are more worried about the economy than any other issue?

    Barb - you are correct.

The thirty-something "Hockey Moms" cited in the last election are now being referred to as "Mortgage Moms.'
