In the sentence below, what does "take" mean?

I can't choose among: to arrest me, to tackle with me, or to fight against me. Anyway, I would like to know a second opinion.
He thinks he can take me = He thinks he can [either] arrest or kill me.
"Take" could simply mean arrest someone; or it could be an abbreviated "take me on" = confront me and possibly kill me.
