    Check The Sentence Plz

"Honey must first have been known as a wild product, the bees building their structures in hollow trees or holes in the rocks, or any similar cavity that chance offered."

Is there any grammatical mistake ? I couldn't understand "the bees building their structures in hollow trees or holes in the rocks, or any similar cavity that chance offered."

I think there is something missing like

"the bees xxx building their structures...."

    Re: Check The Sentence Plz

Honey is commercially produced in hives. Therefore, before man-made hives, bees probably built their honeycomb structures in hollow trees or holes in rocks.

A preposition has been omitted from the sentence. For native speakers used to this style of writing, this omission does not affect the meaning:

"Honey must first have been known as a wild product, with the bees building their structures in hollow trees or holes in the rocks, or any similar cavity that chance offered."
