Smile The money forked out on press officers

From Drug watchdog NICE 'spends more on 'spin' than tests on new treatments' | Mail Online

In the sentence below, what does "froked out" mean?

The money forked out on press officers, marketing executives and consultants included £25,000 on top public relations firm Weber Shandwick to defend NICE's ban on Alzheimer's drugs.

Thanks! Back to the salt mine.

Re: The money forked out on press officers

    "fork out" = spend/spent

Comes from the action of digging up underground vegetables with a fork.
